The Senate has removed Senator Shehu Buba Umar (APC Bauchi), as Chairman Senate Committee on National Security.
Senator Umar has reportedly been on the radar of the US Intelligence agencies over links with terrorist organizations operating in Nigeria.
According to multiple security sources, he is said to have a long record of facilitating sponsorships for known bandits and extremist elements, allegedly funding their trips to Mecca under the guise of pilgrimage support.
Lawmakers say the decision will now open the door for a comprehensive investigation into how certain political actors may have contributed to the expansion and protection of terrorism networks across the country while benefiting from the insecurity.
The development is expected to spark wider scrutiny into political financing, security committee operations, and the role of influential figures accused of sabotaging Nigeria’s anti-terror efforts from within.
