Tinubu Sacks, Replaces Arase As Chair Of Police Commission

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sacked former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), and replaced him with a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Argungu.

The change ends the 16 months’ tenure of Arase, appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Section 29(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 provides that the Commission shall have not less than seven or more than nine members to be appointed for five-year tenure in accordance with Section 155(i) (c) of the Constitution.

Members of the Commission are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Announcing the new development in a statement titled, “President Tinubu appoints new leadership for Police Service Commission and Nigerian Police Trust Fund,” on Monday, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale said: “President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd) as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

“The President has also approved the appointment of Chief Onyemuche Nnamani as Secretary and DIG Taiwo Lakanu (retd.) as member of the commission

“The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Senate.

“Other members of the Police Service Commission will be appointed in due course.

“Furthermore, the President has approved the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Sheidu as the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund with immediate effect.

“The President expects absolute demonstration of integrity, diligence, and patriotic zeal in the discharge of these important functions for the overall wellbeing of the Nigeria Police and the nation.”
