Several students of the University of Benin have been trapped in a three-storey building that collapsed in Ekosodin, an off-campus community dominated by students.
Rescued injured occupants were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and no death was recorded.
The collapse was blamed, by eyewitnesses, on a heavy downpour that started in the early hours of Saturday which fell till about 10am.
A staff member of the University told Vanguard: “The incident happened earlier this morning on Saturday.
“We were on duty when we got the call and we are on the scene, some people have been rescued others are still trapped, we are calling for more hands to ensure that the occupants are rescued. I am still at the scene.”
SP Moses Yamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Edo State, confirmed the incident: “Rescue operations are still ongoing and until that is concluded, we cannot confirm whether there are death casualties or not.
“As soon as I have the report, we will let you know.”
