Former Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi has tackled Nigerian activists who protested the state of the nation during the Goodluck Jonathan administration but currently maintained silence about the pervading hardship under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The former Anambra State Governor spoke at the Night of Tributes for late Niger Delta Leader, Chief Edwin Clark.

Obi said: “I listened to my brother Mike (Ozekhome SAN) when he said ‘May the labours of our heroes past not be in vain.’

“I am happy that General Gowon and Jonathan are here. I can tell you that their sacrifice is in vain. They have sacrificed for nothing.

“We were in this country when people were protesting when there was no need to under Jonathan. Where are those protesters? Have they died? Where are they? So why are we saying it should not be in vain?

“Jonathan increased fuel from N87 to N120 and people were protesting in this country; and when it was N900, they were not protesting. Are they dead?

“So why are we saying it should not be in vain? People protested when $1 was N180 and when it is now N1,500, they are not protesting. Are they dead?

“Let’s face reality, there labour is in vain.

“We have a country now that is not democratic. Let us tell ourselves the truth. It is vain so that we can start picking the pieces of the things people have sacrificed for.”
