The Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited and its leadership are preparing to travel to Kigali, Rwanda, this Friday on five private jets arranged by the son-in-law of Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Already, the development is said to be causing ripples and apprehension in NNPCL

Sources said their goal is to conduct a Board Retreat at an exclusive resort in the Kigali Hills.

A highly-placed source said that the Musa Kida-led board seems to be unaware of the distress caused to Nigeria by the poor performance of the NNPCL over the years.

The new Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is Ahmadu Musa Kida.

He was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a board reconstitution on April 2, 2025,

Reacting to the development, the Executive Director of Nigerian Transparency Initiative (NTI), Bello Onoja, described the planned trip as the height of insensitivity to the plight of the public.

He said, “Instead of addressing serious allegations brought forth by the Nigerian Senate regarding its audited accounts, they are embarking on political pilgrimage linked with 2027 Presidency.

“Rather than concentrate on improving NNPCL, this so-called Board of Experts appears more focused on enjoying their own privileges. It is a disappointing situation for Nigeria. What is happening to our country? Indeed, ‘There Was A Country’, according to Chinua Achebe.

“Our determination to end the menace of political cankerworms and economic scavengers is a battle of No Retreat, No Surrender.”
