A land dispute turned deadly in Enugu State after Abuchi Joseph allegedly murdered his 65-year-old mother, Josephine Azegba, with a hoe during an argument over family land.

The tragic incident unfolded in Umuogbo Ulo community, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, around 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, and has since sent shockwaves across social media and local communities.

Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, reported that the horrific act was reported by the deceased’s daughter, Charity Azegba, who watched in horror as the land dispute spiraled out of control.

Joseph allegedly struck his mother on the head with an iron hoe during a fiery disagreement regarding the sale of ancestral land.

Josephine died on the spot.

Joseph reportedly fled the scene, triggering a massive manhunt by local security forces and vigilant youths.

Abuchi snatched a motorcycle from a woman in the neighboring Okata community, attempting to make a quick getaway.

However, he was caught, beaten, and restrained by enraged locals before being handed over to authorities.

The body of the late Josephine Azegba has been deposited at Ogrute General Hospital mortuary for autopsy as the Enugu State Police Command intensifies investigations into the case.
