The Nigerian Navy has fired a Lieutenant from service and sentenced him to three years in prison following a court-martial that found him guilty of engaging in a scandalous affair with the wife of a fellow officer.
The verdict was announced on Saturday by naval authorities in a statement addressing the breach of military conduct.
The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed due to military protocol, was tried under the Armed Forces Act for conduct deemed prejudicial to good order and discipline.
The court-martial, convened at a naval base in Lagos, heard evidence that the lieutenant had maintained an inappropriate relationship with the spouse of a colleague, violating the Navy’s strict code of ethics.
“The Nigerian Navy remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity,” said Rear Admiral John Okoro, spokesperson for the Navy. “This ruling serves as a deterrent to personnel who might engage in actions that undermine the values of the service.”
He has the right to appeal the decision, though no statement has been made regarding his intent to do so.
