Ghana’s President Johan Mahama has revealed his country has facilitated the return of Nigerian nationals among 14 West Africans deported from the United States in the wake of President Donald Trump’s policy of mass deportations of illegal immigrants.

The Nigerians have been returned to their home country by bus, Mahama said at a Presidential Media Encounter programme held in Ghana.

According to him, a deported Gambian was still being assisted to return home.

The Ghanaian President explained: “We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US. And we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West African nationals don’t need visas to come to our country.

“So if they decided to travel from the US to Accra, they don’t need a visa anyway so if you are bringing our colleague West Africans back, that’s okay.

“I think that agreement has been activated and the first batch of fourteen nationals came, several of them were our Nigerians brothers.”
