Nigeria’s hurdles queen Tobi Amusan started her Tokyo 2025 World Championships campaign with a domineering win in her 100mH heats to be among the fastest qualifiers into the semis.

Competing in Heat 6, the world record holder won conveniently in a respectable 12.53s, finishing far ahead of world 60mH record holder Devynne Charlton, who clocked 12.69s, while Italy’s Elena Carraro was third in 12.86s.

With her time, Amusan heads into the semifinals as the fifth fastest behind defending world champion Danielle Williams (12.40s), Grace Stark (12.46s), Nadine Visser (12.48s), and Pia Skrzyszowska (12.51s).

Having failed to reach the Paris Olympic final last summer, the Nigerian superstar will gun for an avoidance of the same occurrence by booking her spot in the final in Tokyo.

However, she will face stiff competition from other hurdlers who are also in blistering shape, as the women’s 100mH event is classified as arguably the most competitive track event.

Notwithstanding, Amusan will aim to bring back her 2022 form that saw her set the world record and win the world title in Oregon.

If successful in reclaiming her title or at least winning a medal, will see her become the first Nigerian athlete in history to achieve such a feat at world championships level.
