Strengthen Food Systems to Stabilise Economy, Owokoniran Tells Tinubu, Govs

Food security remains the most critical foundation for Nigeria’s economic stability, Hon. (Alhaji) Rahman Owokoniran emphasised during an exclusive interview. According to him, no nation can meaningfully grow its economy when a significant portion of its population cannot afford basic food.

Speaking with while speaking with ADC Media Network 2.0, Owokoniran noted that while fiscal reforms, revenue improvement, and monetary tightening are important, Nigeria’s soaring food inflation driven by insecurity, poor infrastructure, and limited mechanisation continues to undermine national progress.

Recent data from national and international development institutions indicate that millions of households now spend more than half of their income on food, a trend that directly fuels poverty and slows economic recovery.

Hon. Owokoniran stressed the urgent need for better alignment between fiscal, monetary, and agricultural policies to create a more stable environment for food production. He highlighted the importance of expanding mechanised farming, ensuring access to affordable credit for smallholder farmers, and improving rural infrastructure such as feeder roads, storage facilities, and market linkages.

He further explained that strengthening agricultural value chains will reduce post-harvest losses, lower transportation costs, and stabilise prices across Nigerian markets.

“When Nigerians can produce and access food without hardship, every other sector of the economy becomes stronger,” he stated. “Food security is not just an agricultural issue, it is the backbone of national stability, productivity, and long-term growth,” he said while speaking with ADC Media Network 2.0.
