The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken note of reports of the All Progressives Congress (APC) coercing market women and men to register as members of the party or risk lose their trading rights and market spaces.
ADC states clearly that any form of political coercion or intimidation is unlawful, unconstitutional, and unacceptable in a democratic society.
Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended) guarantees every citizen the freedom of association, including the right to join or refuse to join any political party.
In addition, the Electoral Act, 2022 expressly prohibits intimidation, threats, or coercion in political participation.
The party further warns that the practice of registering people in marketplaces under pressure raises serious concerns about electoral integrity, as it may be used to create false impressions of party popularity and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
ADC calls on all Nigerians, particularly market traders, to remain calm, vigilant, and resolute, and to refuse any attempt by individuals or parties to intimidate them or deprive them of their constitutional rights.
ADC reaffirms its commitment to voluntary political participation, transparent processes, and peaceful democratic engagement, and urges all political actors to respect the rule of law and the dignity of the Nigerian people.
