The Nigerian Press Council, NPC, has commended the swift intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, Mr. Sani- Omolori Aliyu, in the case of attack on a journalist with a private radio station in the state by persons suspected to be police personnel.

In a statement in Abuja by the Council’s Director, Research and Documentation, Mr. Dan Ede, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr. Dili Ezughah, says the reaction of the Commissioner is a demonstration of his understanding of the complementary roles of the press and the security agencies in building and maintaining an orderly society.

According to Dr. Ezughah, “our overall expectation is a mutual understanding of our respective roles and respect of same as journalists and security agencies freely carry out their duties to the nation without fear of loss of life or dignity”.
The Executive Secretary said the Council was looking forward to appropriate action taken on the matter, adding that the Council would never abdicate its statutory responsibility of protecting the rights and privileges of journalists in Nigeria in the lawful performance of their professional duties.
