BREAKING: Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Locked Down As Multiple Crashes Kill One… Travellers Advised To Keep Off
Motorists have been advised to ply alternative routes or delay travel if after multiple early-morning crashes occurred today Friday on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing a heavy gridlock that has locked down motorists and left commuters stranded.
One person was reported dead with several injured.
The incidents involved multiple articulated trucks, a Toyota Sienna, and Nissan Cabstar trucks, resulting in casualties and extensive backups stretching past the Otedola Bridge.
Kara Bridge area on both outbound and inbound carriageways spot heavy queues extending back toward Otedola Bridge, affecting the Isheri-Olowora axis and Ogunusi Road.
Emergency teams from LASTMA, FRSC, and LASEMA are on ground for rescue, recovery and clearance, while officers have temporarily opened one-way traffic from Berger down to the OPIC turning to ease movement.
Some alternative routes within Ogun communities have not been spared of the gridlock as motorists sought to avert the standstill.
Areas blocked apart from traffic that stretched kilometres on both sides of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway include Oba Ogunji Road, Alausa Secretariat, CMD Road, and Magodo in Lagos State, and Channels TV Road and Isheri in Ogun State.
Confirming the incident in a post shared on its X handle, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that accident, involving a Toyota Sienna and two Cabster trucks, occured on Kara Bridge.
LASTMA wrote: “A multiple vehicle accident occurred on Kara Bridge inward Mowe/Ibafo along the Lagos Ibadan Express Way, involving a Toyota Sienna, and 2 Cabster trucks.
“Preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by an articulated trailer that overturned earlier on the same bridge.”
Towing vans have reportedly been contacted with recovery operations are still ongoing.
Meanwhile, the accident, LASTMA confirmed, has led to a significant traffic backlog extending to Otedola Bridge and beyond.
It is also affecting Isheri-Olowora and Ogunusi Road.
