Nigerians Still Waiting For Your 2023 Steady Power Supply Promised -ADC’s Owokoniran Calls Out Tinubu
Hon. Rahman Owokoniran, ADC South-West Chieftain and Convener, Frontliners Movement, Lagos State, has challenged the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government to give Nigerians a clear account of its pre-election electricity promise.
Owokoniran recalled that during the campaign that produced the Tinubu administration, Tinubu promised Nigerians that his government would work towards steady, uninterrupted electricity within four years and even challenged Nigerians not to vote him a second term if he failed to deliver.
“That was a promise made by the APC Presidential Candidate tinubu to Nigerians. Today, Nigerians are asking where is the steady electricity tinubu promised us?” Owokoniran asked.
He said the situation had become even more painful because electricity tariffs had increased drastically while many families and businesses still struggled with unreliable supply.
“In many communities, families cannot confidently say they receive even six hours of public electricity in a full day. Yet they are paying more and still spending additional money on petrol and diesel to run generators.
“Nigerians are effectively paying twice the amount for electricity,” he said.
Owokoniran stressed that electricity did not constitute a luxury.
He pointed out: “A student needs electricity to study. A hospital needs it to save lives. A business needs it to operate. A factory needs it to produce. Our young people need it for digital jobs. You cannot seriously fight poverty, create jobs or build industries when businesses and families are living in darkness.”
He said the failure to deliver reliable power should be a major subject for Nigerians ahead of the next election.
He said: “We must move beyond campaign promises. Nigeria needs a serious power plan covering generation, gas supply, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, metering and accountability.”
Owokoniran said Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi would make reliable and affordable electricity a key part of their economic agenda.
“With Atiku and Amaechi, Nigerians should expect a government that sees electricity as the engine of economic growth. We want power that works for homes, hospitals, schools, farmers, businesses and industries. Nigerians should not have to choose between paying an electricity bill and buying fuel for a generator,” Owokoniran reiterated.
“The Nigeria we desire is possible with Atiku and Amaechi.”
