My friend (26) who has never had a boyfriend called me at 1am almost in tears. She said it was burning and she had weird discharge and she was scared. I told her to go see a gynecologist the next morning.
She went. The test came back positive for an STI. She kept saying she was a virgin so it didn’t make sense.
The doctor (a man this time) asked if she’d had any sexual contact recently.
She said no.
He asked if she’d been with a woman.
She said no.
He asked if she’d done anything at all that involved contact down there.
She said, “I just went to a bachelorette party last weekend. Nothing happened.”
He asked what they did.
She said the bride hired a male dancer. They got a private room. She turned down the full package.
The doctor looked at her and said, “What did you actually do then?”
She went quiet, then admitted the dancer went down on her and she returned the favor. She said she was drunk, nervous, and she didn’t count it as real sex because there was no penetration. She still saw herself as a virgin. She also said it wasn’t the first time she’d done something like that at a party, but she “usually says no.”
She told me later she was so embarrassed she started oversharing things the doctor didn’t even ask about.
When I told her to stop doing that and actually try dating someone properly, she said, “I know… but the bride already sent the dancer’s number to the group chat and he replied to me personally. I didn’t say no yet.”
That’s not the lesson.
The real lesson is that oral sex is still sex, even without penetration. Education matters more than labels, and nobody should feel too ashamed to seek medical help.
