Hon. Rahman Owokoniran, speaking in an interview with ADC Media Network 2.0, has commented on recent international actions against terrorism, including reported United States military strikes on ISIS terrorist targets in Nigeria on Christmas Day, announced by the U.S. government under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump.
Hon. Owokoniran described the reported strike as a clear demonstration of decisive leadership and global responsibility in the fight against terrorism, stressing that terrorism remains a grave threat to Nigeria’s peace, unity, and sovereignty.
The reported Christmas Day strike against ISIS sends a strong message that terrorism must be confronted firmly and decisively. It also shows that global cooperation remains critical in defeating terrorist groups that continue to threaten Nigerian lives and communities, he stated.
Hon. Owokoniran noted that insecurity across Nigeria has worsened, with persistent cases of insurgency, banditry, kidnappings, and violent crimes affecting citizens across regions.
According to him, Nigerians now face insecurity not only in remote areas but also on major highways, in towns, villages, schools, and places of worship. He emphasized that the human cost of insecurity is unacceptable, as families continue to suffer loss of life, displacement, and trauma.
He further observed that poverty, hunger, and unemployment have increasingly become drivers of insecurity, creating a dangerous cycle that threatens national stability.
He also expressed concern over the severe economic hardship confronting Nigerians, citing
Rising food and commodity prices
Reduced purchasing power
Job losses and business shutdowns
High energy costs amid unreliable electricity supply
He stated that many Nigerians are being pushed to the brink, warning that economic pain without adequate relief measures weakens social cohesion and national security.
Hon. Owokoniran stressed that while international assistance is important, Nigeria must strengthen its internal leadership, institutions, and security architecture to effectively confront terrorism and criminality.
Nigeria needs leadership that is firm, responsive, and people focused. Security solutions must be matched with economic policies that protect citizens and restore hope.
Owokoniran concluded by calling on leaders at all levels to prioritize the safety, welfare, and dignity of Nigerians, noting that no nation can progress while its people live in fear and hardship.
He urged a renewed commitment to justice, accountability, and national unity, stating that Nigeria’s challenges can be overcome with the right leadership choices and collective resolve.
