Nigerians, wake-up it’s about time to stretch our imagination and demand for democracy and freedom from tyranny and oppression.

The conduct of the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, in the hallowed chamber has fallen far below expectations of a bipartisan compromise that could bring about a credible resolution of the Senate. The Senate has already approved a bill to allow electronic transmission of results. And in the broad daylight the president of the Senate haven altered the approved document read his own altered version of the bill to include the transfer of election results instead of transmission of results. While the whole nation recognize the need for the change in the law to protect the integrity of our results and the senate in agreement with the people passed the bill, Akpabio in collaboration with the ruling party wanted it there own way. He changed the bill and read out his own manipulated version to the full glare of the entire nation. This is not only absurd but also a blatant attempt to undermine the integrity of the senate. It is criminal to say the least. Where is the honor and decorum for this criminal behavior and contempt for the country.
His open threat to frustrate the Electoral Reform Bill by brazenly declaring an intention to replicate the flawed 2023 process instead of respecting the newly passed Senate bill amounts to an assault on democracy and the collective will of the Nigerian people.

Speaking during an interview with ADC Media Network 2.0, the South West Zonal Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. (Alhaji) Rahman Owokoniran, described such actions as reckless, anti-democratic, and dangerous to the future of Nigeria electoral integrity.

According to him, Nigeria cannot move forward when those entrusted with safeguarding democracy openly undermine reform, distaste for democracy and its institutions. They have inadvertently undermined democracy and the rule of law by hideous acts of corruption and incompetence thereby reducing the legitimacy of the government and its institutions. The National Assembly is no longer a hollow chamber of parliament but rather a political space filled with conspiracy and political posturing.

ADC stands firmly with Nigerians in demanding transparency, respect for democratic processes, and an electoral system that truly reflects the will of the people and their liberties to ensure their rights and freedoms in this nation.
