The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, 12th June, 2024 as a Public Holiday to commemorate this year’s democracy day celebration.
June 12 replaced May 29 as the Democracy Day in the current Fourth Republic, courtesy of a pronouncement by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2000.
It commemorates the June 12, 1993 election believed to have been won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, but annulled by the Military.
The Minister of Interior, Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, on Tuesday in a statement by Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry.
He said, “As we mark another Democracy day in the history of our dear country, let us all reflect on the efforts of our founding fathers and ensure that Nigeria remains a united, secured, peaceful and indivisible entity”.
