BREAKING: Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister resigned his position today MondayÂ
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Tuggar dropped his resignation letter today Monday afternoon.
Sources said he was making a bid in Bauchi State’s 2027 governorship election and quit the Tinubu cabinet in complying with the President’s recent directive that political appointees seeking elective office to step down ahead of the March 31, 2026 deadline.
He already tried to be Bauchi State Governor twice but failed at both times.
The departing Minister will be voting for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Yusuf Maitama Tuggar OON was born 12th March 1967.
Prior to being Nigerian Minister of foreign affairs, he served as the Nigerian Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023.
He was previously a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 representing Gamawa; and he ran twice for the office of the Governor of Bauchi State.
Tuggar’s exit comes amid a broader wave of expected resignations within President Tinubu’s cabinet, following a directive issued earlier in March.
The order, communicated through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, mandates all political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It applies to a broad category of officials, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executives of federal agencies and parastatals.
