The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I has been reported dead.
Oba Akran was reported to have died early today Monday, 12 January, 2026.
At His Majesty’s 89th birthday celebration, September last year, he wrote a short poem:
The love of the Lord upon me is beyond measure,
His fire in my soul burns like a refining furnace.
He is my strength in every season,
The light that conquers every shadow.
At 89, I stand strong and renewed,
A life preserved by divine providence.

Following the demise of the monarch, all Badagry markets have been ordered closed.
The Oro masquerade will expectedly go to town in his honour from this night.
Oba Akran was a politician and journalist before ascending the throne in 1977.
One of the longest serving monarchs in Lagos State, he spent 48 years on the throne.
A member of the Action Group, he represented Badagry in the Parliament in 1951 and was Minister in the pre-Independence era.
He was also instrumental to the establishment of the flagship secondary school in Badagry, the Badagry Grammar School.
