A 54-years-old prophet of the Celestial Church of Christ, Eagle Parish has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Odo Eran, Idiroko area of Ogun state.
The victim identified as Yomi Adetula, was shot at about 10:30am on Sunday, during a church service and his head severely damaged with an axe.
He was the Director, Anti-Arms Smuggling of the Social Orientation and Safety (So-Safe) Corps in Ogun State.
A report by the online news group, FIJ said: “Adetula is one of the witnesses listed by FIJ in its defence of the libel lawsuit filed by IBD Dende in response to FIJ’s undercover investigation and subsequent documentary on smuggling, and the ‘Good Morning Nigeria Customs’ tweets by its founder ‘Fisayo Soyombo.”
IBD, a socialite, had been acclaimed by FIJ as a smuggling kingpin in the Idiroko axis of the Nigeria-Benin Republic border area of Ogun State.
Three assailants reportedly came into the church and opened fire on the victim, before they fled the scene.
Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said the victim was found in the pool of his blood.
Odutola said, “Police officers raced to the scene and saw one Yomi Adetula, male, aged about 54yrs lifeless in the pool of his own blood which stained his white celestial garment, lying face up.
”On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets and his head was not spared, to ensure the victim was really dead it was mangled with axe.
“On police inquiry, information further revealed that three men came into the church, brought out long double barrel guns, aimed at their target and fired a shot that brought the deceased down.”
She stated that investigations had been launched into the very sad occurrence and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects who escaped towards the border area.
Odutola said that with the effort of the Idiroko Divisional Police Officer, the corpse was deposited at the General Hospital morgue, Ilaro.
“They first shot him but the bullets did not penetrate him,” one resident told FIJ. “They then proceeded to inflict fatal wounds on him with their other weapons, which include hammer and machete. From the way they operated, it’s clear they were hired assassins.”
FIJ saw gory photos of Adetula’s corpse, his face disfigured, his trunk blood-stained, ostensibly from gunshot wounds.
