Author Chimamanda’s Son Death: Lagos Doctor Suspended Over Negligence
The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, in Lagos and two other medical professionals from practising in Nigeria, following their role in the death of a twin son of world-renowned Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The suspension was announced Tuesday after the panel established a prima facie case of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi, the son of Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The child passed away on January 7, 2026 at the hospital following alleged lapses in care, including an overdose of the sedative propofol, inadequate monitoring and fáilure to provide necessary oxygen support.
One of a pair of twin boys, Nkanu Nnamdi Esege was born in 2024.
The family alleged that improper sedation and monitoring led to the toddler’s death, accusing the facility of negligence.
The toddler was undergoing preparatory procedures (MRI/spinal tap) at Euracare, referred from Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, when he died.
Euracare immediately expressed condolences but denied wrongdoing, while insisting that the care they gave the deceased met international standards. Following protests by the parents and the public, the Lagos State Corona Court opened an inquest, with a formal hearing scheduled for April 14, 2026, at the Yaba Magistrate Court.
However, due to the cremation of the child, the investigation relies on medical records and expert testimony.
