Edo State’s First Lady has shed light on why she and her husband had yet to have children, in the wake of Senator Adams Oshiomhole mocking their status as a childless couple.

Mrs. Betsy Obaseki said although she had been pregnant severally, the experience ended in multiple miscarriages, stillbirths and evacuations of dead babies from her womb.

The wife of Edo State’s Governor Godwin Obaseki spoke on Saturday during a Zoom meeting with Edo women based outside Nigeria.

Her remarks came in response to a viral video of Obaseki’s predecessor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, casting aspersions on the couple’s current childless state.

Addressing the virtual meeting that engaged over 200 women, who had convened from all over the world, Obaseki reminded them that every individual had been created by the Lord for a purpose.

Obaseki said: “My words of comfort to you, like myself, who have conceived and experienced miscarriages, painful stillbirths, and evacuations of babies, who died in our wombs and as a result, have no children to show for the pain we have endured.

“You are not barren. I dare to call you fruitful.

“You and I are potential and proud mothers of children that will come in God’s time. Enjoy the life God has given you.

“Take your mind off your challenge, and before you know it, children will start coming.”

Obaseki further said beyond child bearing, she had made diverse contributions to society.

“Being fruitful is not limited to childbearing. It is about impacting lives and creating positive change in society. There is no point in feeling bad. Women can fulfill God’s purpose in many ways beyond motherhood,” she added.

Founder of the group, Mrs. Adesuwa Obasohan, pledged her support for Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy, as they did for Governor Obaseki.
