Edo State market women have launched a protest against reported plans by daughter of the Nigerian President and Iyaloja of Lagos, Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, to impose a leadership structure on them.

Acting under the aegis of the Edo State Market Women Association, the traders embarked on a peaceful protest around the King Square axis and Oba Market in Benin City to register their displeasure over the alleged plan.

Speaking to journalists on behalf of market women drawn from the three senatorial districts, their leader, Blackky Ogiamen, rejected the alleged plan.

She said that it amounted to an act of imposition.

According to her, the market women’s association in the state was non-partisan and had worked with successive governments in Edo.

The women vow to resist any illegality that would pose a threat to the peace and harmony enjoyed by the association.

Meanwhile, the alleged move has sparked online backlash, with many criticizing the Tinubu family’s attempts to centralize power.

Equally, the development has sparked widespread criticism and outrage among Edo residents, who see it as an overreach by the Lagos administration.
