Saudi Arabia has announced that today Wednesday, May 28, will mark the first day of Dhu Al Hijjah, as the crescent moon was sighted in the Kingdom on Tuesday evening.
Accordingly, the festival of Eid Al Adha 2025 will be observed on Friday, June 6, as it always falls on the 10th day of Dhu Al Hijjah.
In the South-West of Nigeria, the festival is called “Ileya,” a Yoruba term.
Thus, Arafat Day will be observed on Thursday, June 5.
Eid Adha is one of the two blessed Eids (occasions of celebration) that Muslims mark each year.
Eid Adha remembers the sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
In remembrance of his sacrifice and to help the poor and needy, Muslims are encouraged to give their own sacrifice: qurbani.
In the South-West of Nigeria, the festival is called “Ileya,” a Yoruba term.
It is also known as Eid al-Kabir or the Festival of Sacrifice.
In Yoruba, “Ileya” is a shortened version of “Ile ti ya,” which translates to “the house is ready” or “it’s time to go home,” suggesting a time of homecoming and celebration.Â
