Finidi George Hired As Ad Hoc Coach Of Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says former Super Eagles Captain Finidi George has been put in charge of the national team for the games against Ghana and Mali this international break.

Finidi George, 52, has been the Head Coach of Enyimba F.C. since September 2021.

Eagles’ last Coach Jose Peseiro left, following the expiration of his contract on February 29.

Both NFF and Peseiro were unwilling to renew the expatriate’s contract, although when he won Silver for the Nigerian national team at the Cote d’Ivoire-hosted AFCON.

In its short statement on the Eagles’ verified X handle, NFF said: “Coach George Finidi has held a meeting with Super Eagles team officials as he leads the Super Eagles in international friendlies against Ghana and Mali #SoarSuperEagles.”

Nigeria face Ghana in an international friendly at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, Morocco, on Friday, March 22.

Four days afterwards on Tuesday, 26th March, the Super Eagles will clash with the Les Aigles of Mali at the same venue.

He led the team to win his first title as a Coach in the 2023 Nigeria Premier League season.

As a player, he played as a right winger and wore the number 7 jersey.

After making a name for himself at Ajax in the Netherlands – being a leading figure in a team which won eight major titles, including the 1995 Champions League – he played several years in Spain with Real Betis.

He also played for a brief spell in England before retiring.

Finidi was an important member of the Nigeria team during the 1990s, appearing in two World Cups.
