After successfully hosting its first annual spelling bee for schools in Badagry division of Lagos State last year, Prime Apex News Magazine, the company organising the competition, has concluded arrangements for the second edition to take place on July 6, this year.
The project supported by Africa leading bank, First Bank of Nigeria, Friesland Campina WAMCO Nigeria Plc and the Badagry Federal Constituency representative, in the House of Representatives, Honorable Sesi Whingan, will hold in the event hall of King George Schools, Imeke, Badagry with the registration of participants starting by 8.am
A statement issued by Ola Jones the Editor in Chief Prime Apex Magazine stated that this year’s competition will be more interesting and rewarding.
“We are stepping out more boldly this year, to invite children from both primary and secondary institutions still in the same division to participate in the second edition of the competition,” the statement pointed out
Recalling the previous year’s event, the organisers, described it as very remarkable, as students of Meritland Group of Schools, emerged overall winner, first and second runners up, after a stiff competition with children from other institutions.
“Apart from cash awards, trophy and medals bagged by the winners, valuable gift items from various companies that supported the project, including customised merchandises provided by First Bank were also given to participants,” it added.
As promised, during activities for the first edition, there had been changes in the mode of the competition.
The first edition of the annual competition embraced only students in the secondary cadre last year, but it has been modified to henceforth accommodate pupils at the primary level.
This means that, the competition will be in two sessions, one for the secondary students, and the other for the primary but both to take place same day.
“We had invited about 20 schools to participate in the competition and we strongly assure prospective participants that the second edition will be more interesting and profitable. To this end, we urge all interested schools to indicate their willingness with registration of their students,” the statement concluded.
Commenting on the arrangements for the security of participating school children, and others to attend the event, the spelling bee coordinator, Angela Daodu in another press release, said in view of the state of insecurity, “we are very mindful of the need to provide adequate protection for all and sundry that will participate in the project. We are therefore making arrangements with the law enforcement agencies and other security outfits to be present at the venue of the event.
She noted that PRIME APEX Spelling Bee, (PASB) had been structured to accommodate students in a single group but added that it would be basically an oral competition.
“However, it may still be restructured in the future to accommodate future innovation and ideas which may likely to from schools’ management, parents and other interested bodies for improvement,” explained.
The PASB is a community-wide enrichment event organized by Olu Angel Ventures and First August Solutions Limited, publishers of Prime Apex News Magazine. The Bee is modelled after the competition which has its origin in the United States of America and held by schools and other organizations in that country.
Spelling bees help to promote literacy by allowing children to work towards a specific goal and providing a forum in which children can demonstrate their accomplishments. Bees also help children improve their spelling, vocabulary, study and public speaking skills and ability to thrive under pressure.
About 1000 students from various institution private and public, are expected to participate in this year’s competition. Each school is also expected to present maximum of 50 students to witness the competition and of the figure only three chosen by the school from the secondary cadre and three from the primary, will actively participate in the bee to represent each school.
Prime Apex is a media organisation with interest also in educational meetings and competitions for parents, teachers and other professionals on their social, educational and emotional needs .
