Armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have killed five farmers in the Ajegunle Powerline community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the incident, without providing casualty figures.
Odunlami said that the police were still investigating the matter.
The victims were said to be labourers from Plateau and Kaduna states working on the farmlands.
An eyewitness account narrated that the attack occurred around 3:00 pm on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, adding that the herdsmen had engaged in destroying their crops and disrupting their livelihood in the community.
According to the source who is also a farmer, the attacks have become a daily occurrence, and many farmers have fled their farms for fear of being killed.
He lamented that the lives of farmers are being endangered, many have been killed, with their women raped occasionally.
One of the labourers who survived the attack, and escaped, revealed that the herdsmen suddenly appeared, and started shooting sporadically, killing five people.
