Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives today Thursday resolved to slash their salaries by 50 percent to identity with the prevailing economic hardship.

They passed the resolution during plenary after a motion of urgent public importance.

Sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State, the motion bore the title: “An Appeal to the Proponents of Proposed Nationwide Protest to Maintain Peace, Eschew Violence and Open the Windows for Meaningful Engagements with Government at all Levels in Order to Address their Issues.”

Hon. Ben Kalu, Deputy Speaker, proposed the amendment, stating that it is a sacrifice the legislators should make.

According to Kalu, lawmakers earned N500,000 monthly.

However, Kalu was subsequently corrected by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who said their salary came to N600,000 monthly.
