June 16 Declared Sallah Day By Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has announced the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent, signalling the start of the 12th Islamic month.
Islam’s biggest festival, Eid Al-Adha, will thus be observed on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Eid al-Adha is a festival celebrated by Muslims in Nigeria and all over the world on the 10th day of the Hijri month of Dhu al-Hijja.
The Sallah festival is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year.
It honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Isma’il (Ishmael) as an act of submission to God’s (Allah) command.
The festival is popularly known as Eid-el-Kabir, and is also called Eid-al-Adha.
The announcement of the festive event, usually characterised by the killing of rams, was made in Riyadh on Thursday, June 6.
Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court had on Wednesday, June 5, called on all Muslims across the Kingdom to participate in the sighting of the crescent moon of the Arabic month Dhu Al Hijjah.
With the crescent sighted, today, June 7, marks the beginning of the holy month.
Also, the Hajj pilgrimage for 1445 AH-2024 will commence on Friday, June 14, with the day of Arafah falling on Saturday, June 15.
