Lionel Messi and Inter Miami have been eliminated from the Club World Cup, losing 4-0 to his former club Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 in Atlanta.
Joao Neves struck twice as Paris Saint-Germain PSG brushed aside Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami with a resounding 4-0 win at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, booking their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals emphatically.
PSG scored all four goals in the first half.
Joao Neves knocked in the first two, heading home unmarked in the sixth minute before finishing off a lovely team move a half hour later.
A Tomas Aviles own goal accounted for the third before Achraf Hakimi added the fourth on the stroke of half-time.
Achraf Hakimi piled on further misery for Inter Miami, netting PSG’s fourth goal just before halftime.
With Messi unable to influence proceedings, his side went into the break looking completely outplayed.
PSG wasted no time, taking the lead within the opening five minutes as João Neves rose high to head the ball into the net, giving his side an early advantage.
Inter Miami was the only MLS club to reach the knockout stage of the Club World Cup this year and remained unbeaten in the group stage, where they beat Porto to stun the world.
Inter Miami did put some fight in the second half but failed to score a goal.
Messi, who struggled in the first half, displayed some glimpses of his brilliance in the second.
