With the way some of you boldly tweet ignorant filth on this app, to justify the evils done by this govt and defend the cruelty meted out on helpless Nigerians while you live abroad in a better country;
Some of us who also live abroad need to fiercely resist this intellectual witchcraft with cogent corrections for the sake of the naive audience who may swallow this junk talk here. So let’s clarify a few things:
In the UK,
Since you want to compare UK to Nigeria,
The minimum wage is £11.44 PER HOUR.
That means someone who works 8hours per day will make £91.5 PER DAY. If they work 5 days a week, that’s £457 PER WEEK. And in a 4-week month, that’s £1,830 a month. This means £21,960 per year.
Since we are doing illogical comparisons:
That means someone in UK on minimum wage will make 21,289 naira PER HOUR; 170,318 naira PER DAY; 850,477 naira PER WEEK and 3.4 million naira PER MONTH. This is the minimum wage in UK- since you want to blindly compare UK to Nigeria. But of course anybody with a brain knows you can’t blindly make such comparisons.
But let’s carry on:
Now this person on minimum wage in the UK will have access to free healthcare, their kids will access free primary and secondary education, they may qualify for free housing/subsidised housing, and many other state sponsored benefits for being on the minimum wage. Please does Nigeria have any of these benefits for anyone on minimum wage?
If they are elderly,
If they have little kids,
If they have a disability;
If they work less than 16 hours a week;
If they care for someone who is dying, disabled or have a chronic/terminal illness;
There are state sponsored benefits and payments that are available for anyone in any of the above categories. Again I ask you, does Nigeria have any of these available for anyone in any of these categories?
Also let it be noted that this person on minimum wage in the UK will pay ZERO tax on £12,570 of their earnings and ONLY pay 20% tax on the £9,390 left.
The UK is a working country and a working system. NOBODY owes anybody a salary. NOBODY pays anybody 1/3 or 1/4 of what they deserve to be paid when the person expects full payment at end of month. In Nigeria a governor can owe 7 months salary and the criminal will still be moving around undisturbed. NOBODY can try that as an employer in the UK. There are government agencies and policies to protect people from such madness. Do we have that in Nigeria???
In Nigeria;
There is almost ZERO free quality schools. There is almost ZERO access to free healthcare. There is almost ZERO housing available to the poor, unemployed or people on minimum wage. In UK, rent is paid weekly/monthly- never yearly. In Nigeria, a landlord will collect two years rent ahead as though an employer pays you two years salary in advance.
I sincerely find it intellectually dishonest and deceitful, frankly bordering on deliberate wickedness, and political witchcraft to compare uk to Nigeria with selective analysis by picking the things you like about the uk system (like how they strike) but specifically failing to mention the many other things they do for their citizens that we should emulate but our govt fails to.
How some of you can still do this kind of disingenuous tweeting is a shocker especially knowing you simply say these in a bid to tactically justify the continued oppression of Nigerians who are already trampled, traumatised and tortured by the wicked, insensitive, inhuman daily policies of a govt that has determined to make life hell for the millions of its own citizens.
It is well.
