The Labour Party (LP) has reserved its 2027 presidential ticket for its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, as part of its resolutions from the National Convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday.

Also, it offered Governor Alex Otti of Abia State the right of first refusal, in the next governorship election coming in 2027.

These were part of resolutions contained in the LP Communiqué issued after the convention and signed by the re-elected National Chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Julius Abure, and National Secretary, Umar Faruk Ibrahim.

In retaining Peter Obi as its candidate, LP said it aimed to position itself for a strong and competitive election in 2027.

According to the party, Otti’s potential candidacy added depth and diversity to the party’s electoral strategy, potentially broadening its appeal to voters nationwide.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the re-election of Abure as the party’s National Chairman at the National Convention of the party on Wednesday.

The convention also saw all members of the National Working Committee return.

The slots for representatives of both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress were, however, left vacant.

NLC spokesman, Benson Upah, described the convention as a charade.

Upah said: “It’s an illegality, a nullity. The whole exercise was a charade! Nothing can legitimise such brazen impunity.”
