MC Oluomo’s Rival Sego Escapes Assassination At Lagos Home

The home of the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, was on Sunday attacked by suspected assassins.

Sego and the current National President of the NURTW, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), have always been rivals contesting for control of the Lagos chapter.

However, the state government waded in and brokered peace in January 2024, with Sego taking over the state and MC Oluomo moving on to steer affairs at the National Secretariat of the union in Abuja.

Both transport union leaders later visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja to confirm the deal.

Sego’s home in Surulere area of Lagos was reportedly invaded by armed gunmen in the early hours of Sunday.

Unaware of Sego’s absence from his home at the time of their attack, the assailants forcefully gained entry into his residence.

They assaulted the security guard on duty and later left upon learning that their target was absent.

Although the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that he had not yet received any report regarding the incident, an aide to the NURTW boss, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

He said: “It is true that some gunmen invaded the chairman’s house between Saturday and Sunday. They forced their way into the building and overpowered the security man. After attacking him, they left when they were told the chairman was not around.

“We were on the Island, but they thought that we were in Surulere

“Before they eventually left, they tied the security man and took his picture with a threat that he should not tell the chairman anything or they would come back and kill him.”

The incident was confirmed to SaharaReporters by a stakeholder in the union, Prince Idowu Onikoyi, during a telephone conversation on Monday afternoon.

“Yes, it was true. Thank God, the Chairman escaped, and he is presently fine and healthy. The police have been briefed about the matter. And also the security man who was met at home and beaten by the suspected assassins has gone to the police to write his statement,” Onikoyi stated.

Officers from the Area C Command reportedly visited the residence to assess the scene and document the damages.

The police also interrogated the security guard, who is believed to have provided vital information that could help in identifying those responsible for the attack.

In a statement, a close associate of Tafa Sego expressed deep concern about the assassination attempt, highlighting the tension surrounding his leadership at a time when he was implementing policies to improve the welfare of NURTW members.

“The Chairman is deeply concerned about being targeted, especially at a time when he is pushing for reforms aimed at bettering the lives of our members. We are not backing down, and we will ensure full cooperation with the security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the associate said.
