Niger Republic Issue Harsh Orders On Imports From Nigeria

Niger Republic has introduced new and harsh restrictions on goods entering from Nigeria, citing heightened security concerns and suspicions over Nigerian military activity across the Sahel.

“For security requirements, all goods originating from Nigeria must be unloaded and inspected at the entry offices before any transit formalities,” said Colonel Mohamed Yacouba Siddo in a directive issued Tuesday.

According to the notice, Niger has ordered that all goods coming from Nigeria—especially what it described as “miscellaneous goods”—must be offloaded and thoroughly inspected at the country’s entry points before they are allowed to transit further.

The notice reads, “For security requirements, all goods originating from Nigeria, particularly so-called miscellaneous goods, must be unloaded and inspected at the entry offices before any transit formalities.”

It added that goods accompanied by valid documentation from recognised ports of discharge would only be offloaded at their final destination.

Colonel Siddo stressed strict compliance with the new directive, urging officers to report any challenges encountered during its enforcement.

This comes amid heightened regional tension following a failed coup in the Republic of Benin on Sunday.
