The first female Secretary and former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Lagos State, Mrs. Olufunke Fadugba, has blamed the series of deaths related to free food distribution last week on pervading poverty ravaging the country.
According to her, it was worrisome that poor Nigerians appeared to be embracing death in the face of hunger.
Fadugba spoke against the backdrop of stampedes breaking out in free food distribution venues in Ibadan, Abuja and Anambra State last week.
She made her views on a WhatsApp group platform.
Fadugba said: “All these stampedes leading to the death of innocent people indicate the depth of poverty in the land. If people rush to death over palliative, it shows that to them, death is a better option.
“May God touch the hearts of our leaders to introduce policies that will promote living as against those that encourage people to choose to die.”
