Ogun NUJ Secretary, One Other Arraigned In Abeokuta On Kidnapping, Other Charges After Clash With Police

Bunmi Adigun, 43, identified in court records as the Secretary of the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Aderigbigbe Lekan, 28, were arraigned on Friday before Magistrate Court in Abeokuta, on multiple criminal charges stemming from an incident that occurred the previous night at Kemta junction, Idi Aba.

The charge sheet, filed by the Commissioner of Police, Kemta Division, lists eight counts against the defendants. These include attempted kidnapping, assault on a police officer, obstruction of police duties, unlawful detention, criminal damage, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, failure to produce valid vehicle documentation, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

According to court documents, Adigun is accused of attempting to kidnap a police officer, PC Adebayo Okkijesu, at approximately 11:00 p.m. on 18 December 2025.

He is also charged with unlawfully detaining the officer in his vehicle and attempting to transport him to an undisclosed location.

Both defendants allegedly obstructed police officers from conducting a lawful search and inspection of their vehicle, a blue Toyota Camry with registration number OG 16 A43.

Additional charges against Adigun include assaulting PC Okikijesu during the incident, damaging the fender of a vehicle belonging to one Mr. Ade Akiti, and failing to present valid vehicle documents upon request. The Camry in question is also suspected to be stolen, as Adigun was reportedly unable to prove ownership.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Famene O.B., brought the matter before Magistrate Mrs. A.K. Arabas (CM1). Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges. The case was filed by CSP Olawale Famobuwo, Divisional Police Officer of Kemta Division, with PC Adebayo Kehinde listed as the investigating officer.

Bail was granted in the sum of #1,000,000 and ₦500,000 respectively, and the case was adjourned to 21 January 2026 for further hearing.

The charges cite various provisions of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006, and the Ogun State Road Traffic Law, 2017.

These include sections addressing attempted felony, assault on public officers, obstruction of lawful duties, unlawful detention, criminal damage, and vehicle-related offences.
