Femi Falana opened a can of worm today on Arise. He showed that contrary to the high pressure position taken by Arise “showmen” on PENGASSAN and NUPENG regarding Dangote Refinery. Falana said Arise and its sister organization -ThisDay – forbids unionism in its establishment by not allowing their members to join the Nigerian Union of Journalists. Secondly, he said he is aware that Arise workers are being owed salaries, a malaise that is the underwear of Arise owner, Nduka Obaigbena, despite his success as a media mogul, at least in Nigeria. His newspaper in SA, ThisDay SA, was declared bankrupt because he was not paying salaries, a practice that is condoned in Nigeria but never in any country where workers’ rights, especially right to wages -as and at when due – are enforced by law.
