The National Interim Committee (NIC) backed by Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the 2023 election and Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, has agreed to appeal Tuesday’s judgement by the Federal High Court in Abuja that affirmed Julius Abure, as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

The Federal High Court judgement ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accord recognition to Abure and his LC executive council.

Reacting to the judgement, former Minister of Finance Nenadi Usman, Chairman of the NIC, inaugurated in September at a meeting attended by both Obi and Otti, Pat Utomi and other top leaders of the party, said the decision to appeal came after relevant stakeholders of the party deliberated on the development.

Usman said in a statement: “This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee). We deliberated on the judgment passed today.

“The case actually preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee. However, after being briefed, the Caretaker Committee decided to join the case. Consequently, we have resolved to appeal the judgment accordingly. I therefore, call on all party members to remain calm and maintain peace as we continue our reconciliation efforts.”

However, the former Finance Minister noted that the judgement which upheld the Nnewi, Anambra State National Convention of the party preceded and did not arise from the formation of her Caretaker Committee.
