Plateau Gov Places Mangu Council Under 24-Hour Curfew

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has slammed a 24-hour curfew on the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, following the outbreak of violence there.

The Governor’s Spokesman, Gyang Bere, who announced this in a press statement today Tuesday, said the decision was taken after consultations with relevant security agencies.

Bare also said the move was aimed at preventing a breakdown of law and order in the local government area.

The statement directed residents to comply with the sit-at-home order, noting that only persons on essential duties are allowed to move within the local government area until further notice.

The governor lamented that some people are still determined to create an atmosphere of insecurity in the state despite the government’s efforts to end the activities of terrorist elements.

He expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and the injured, assuring them that the government would not relent in ensuring lasting peace in the state.

Mutfwang promised that the curfew would be reviewed as soon as the security situation improves in the locality.

The statement read in the part, “Governor Mutfwang took the decision after consultations with the relevant security agencies.

“He stated that only persons on essential duties are allowed to move within the local government area until further notice.

“He urged all citizens, especially residents of Mangu Local Government Area, to comply with the directive and assist the security personnel by providing reliable information to restore peace and order in the area.

“He lamented that some people are still determined to create an atmosphere of insecurity in the state, despite the government’s efforts to end the activities of terrorist elements.

“He expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims and the injured and assured them that the government will not relent in ensuring lasting peace in the state.

“He promised that the curfew will be reviewed as soon as the security situation improves.”

Following the alleged killing of 29 persons, mostly women and children in a midnight attack on the 16th of May 2023, by suspected militia herders in Kubwat and Fungzai villages, the Plateau State Government imposed a curfew in the Mangu local government area.

On July 9, 2023, the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, imposed a 24-hour curfew on the Mangu Local Government Area following incessant attacks that led to loss of lives and properties in the area.

No fewer than 13 persons were killed in attacks within some communities in the LGA.

According to residents in the affected communities, bandits invaded Pushit and Sabon-Gari on Saturday night, while some residents were injured and houses burnt.

To avoid reprisal and escalation of the situation, the governor announced the imposition of a 24-hour curfew in Mangu.
