Women from Isiama Afara Ukwu in Abia State, the country home of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have held a peaceful protest to demand his freedom from detention.
Kanu has been held by the DSS since June 2021, after an extraordinarily rendition from Kenya.
He has since faced charges for alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.
Bearing Kanu’s portrait, they sang protest songs, and demanded the immediate release of the IPOB leader from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) where he has been held since June 2021 when he was extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya for alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.
Recently, the South-East Governors Forum agreed to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to persuade the government about Kanu’s release from detention.
Like other interest groups, they said Kanu’s prolonged detention was emboldening criminal elements posing as agitators to engage in unlawful activities in the South-East region.
Similarly, over 50 federal lawmakers from diverse political parties and regions in Nigeria have written to the President over Kanu’s release from detention.
They said his release from detention would significantly contribute to restoring peace in the South-East.
