The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced October 5 for the local government elections.

The electoral agency released guidelines regarding the conduct of the council elections in the state on Monday, July 1

After the three-year tenure of the elected chairmen and councillors of the 23 LGAs, the Governor Simi Fubara inaugurated caretaker committees as replacements.

The caretakers will continue in office till the election of councillors and council chairmen.

However, the move sparked protests by the former chairmen loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who insisted that the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly had extended their tenure by six months.
