Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives have commenced their annual recess.
Open plenary sessions have been adjourned for two months, and lawmakers will resume on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
The Senate Thursday adjourned plenary to September 23, 2025.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio tasked the various ad-hoc and standing committees to use the holiday period to carry out mandated assignments and tidy up reports.
The adjournment was announced by Senate leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, after a closed door meeting held by the senators, which lasted for about two hours.
At the House of Representatives, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who addressed the closing session on Wednesday, said that standing committees would continue their oversight functions during the recess, in order to guarantee that Federal agencies comply with budgetary and policy guidelines.
The Speaker urged members to utilize the period to connect with their constituents, address local concerns, and monitor ongoing federal projects in their respective constituencies.
“This recess is not a vacation but an opportunity to strengthen our bond with the people we serve and ensure effective representation,” Abbas stated.
