President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis sessions in Federal-owned hospitals, cutting the fee from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000.

Daniel Bwala, the President’s spokesperson, disclosed the development on Monday in a post via his X handle.

He explained that the initiative will begin in 10 public hospitals before extending to Federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across the country.

According to him, the move will bring relief to thousands of Nigerians suffering from kidney-related illnesses, many of whom cannot afford the high cost of treatment.

Bwala said: “The development, which will first commence in ten public hospitals, will provide relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases, many of whom cannot pay for the dialysis.

“More federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be added before the end of the year to widen access nationwide.”

He further noted that the decision reflects Tinubu’s commitment to improving access to affordable healthcare, recalling that the President had earlier approved free caesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals to reduce maternal deaths.
