President Donald Trump today observes the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks by attending a ceremony at the Pentagon commemorating the lives lost when al-Qaida militants hijacked planes and killed nearly 3,000 people in three locations.
It’s the second year in a row for Trump to mark the day at the Pentagon.
The President, who is originally from New York, last attended the ground zero ceremony there in 2024.
Families of victims are expected to gather at the memorial alongside a number of dignitaries.
Those expected to attend include Mayor Mamdani, Vice President JD Vance and former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Vance had planned to be in New York for the anniversary last year but instead flew to Salt Lake City to be with the family of Charlie Kirk after the conservative activist was assassinated.
On Wednesday, Trump issued a proclamation that marked Friday as “Patriot Day 2026,” recounting the chronology of the 2001 day on which “the peace of our Nation was shattered” and calling his administration “unwavering in its commitment to ensure that our Nation is defended by the strongest and most lethal military the world has ever known.”

During Friday’s ceremony, an additional bell and moment of silence will honor first responders, recovery workers, survivors and residents who have died from 9/11-related illnesses. The anniversary marks 25 years since the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people and left a lasting impact on the nation.
Several tributes are scheduled throughout the morning to commemorate the victims of the attacks.
A major security operation is in effect in Lower Manhattan as officials prepare for the remembrance ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial. The NYPD is securing the site with fencing and counterterrorism officers.
Beginning at 6 a.m., traffic restrictions will be in place south of Canal Street to Battery Place, between Broadway and West Street. The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel will remain open, as will southbound Broadway, but trucks are prohibited from entering the area.
As the city prepared for the anniversary, NY Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, spoke at a mosque Thursday night, during an interfaith peace walk.
His appearance came as some critics continued to call for the city’s first Muslim mayor not to attend the Ground Zero ceremony.
“We know that solidarity is a fragile thing. It cannot only be remembered. It must also be something that we continue to practice,” Mamdani said.
The remembrance ceremony includes several moments of silence corresponding with key events of September 11, 2001.
The observances begin at 8:46 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, followed by 9:03 a.m., when United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
Additional moments of silence are planned to mark the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The quarter-century milestone brings together those who witnessed the events in Lower Manhattan, families who lost loved ones and younger generations learning about one of the most significant days in modern American history.
The observance continues the nation’s pledge to never forget the victims and legacy of September 11.
