Two of the seven statutory commissioners in the Rivers State Electoral Commission (RSIEC) have tendered their resignation.

Citing the Supreme Court ruling, Professor Simeon Emenike Weli and Dr. Lazberry Nyebuchi Nnah sent in their letters of resignation dated Friday 7th March 2025 to the RSIEC.

The commission had announced August 9 as the date for another round of council elections after the Supreme Court judgement annulled the one it conducted last October due to violation of electoral laws amidst the ongoing political impasse in Rivers State.

STORY CONTINUES UNDERNEATH….

Justice Jamilu Tukur, who read the lead judgment last week Friday, declared the LG polls annulled following an appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that cited flaws in the exercise.

On Wednesday, the assembly invited Adolphus Enebeli, RSIEC Chairman, and commissioners of the state electoral body, for Friday, to present documents to explain how the commission spent state resources without an appropriation law since January 2024.

However, the RSIEC officials failed to appear before the assembly on Friday.

The assembly resolved to extend the invitation to Monday to enable the RSIEC officials to appear for questioning and instructed the Clerk to send another invitation letter for the new date.

On Wednesday, RSIEC had announced August 9, 2025, for the conduct of fresh LGA elections in Rivers, following the Supreme Court nullifying the local government election conducted on October 5, 2024.

In its lead judgment delivered by Jamilu Tukur, the apex court held that there was no evidence to show that the conditions set out in Section 150(3) of the Electoral Act had been met before the electoral umpire conducted the polls.
