Rwandan authorities have said the asylum deal signed with Britain contained no stipulation about repaying funds should the multi-million-dollar policy be scrapped.
The statement came in reaction to the announcement by the U.K.’s new administration that the agreement was “dead and buried.”
Since the deal was announced in April 2022, Kigali has already received at least $307 millio from Britain, and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame had earlier suggested the funds could be returned if no migrants came — though he also highlighted that there was no obligation.
Delivering an address on state television late Tuesday, Rwanda’s deputy government spokesperson Alain Mukuralinda said, “Let this be clear, paying back the money was never part of the agreement.”
