Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that Abuja remains one of the safest places to live in the country.
Wike spoke as the Commissioner for Police in his Federal Capital Territory, CP Ajao Adewale, reported that Arise TV reporter, Sommie Maduagwu, jumped from her third floor apartment in a robbery incident at her apartment located in the Katampe area of the FCT on Monday, September 29.
Speaking as part of activities to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the Minister credited this achievement to collaborative efforts between the government and the residents’ commitment to peace.
Wike stated that despite security challenges in other parts of Nigeria, the FCT has maintained its status as a model of unity and security.
“Residents have remained intentional about living together in peace and harmony in spite of a few distractions. Consequently, the FCT has become one of the most peaceful places to reside in the entire country,” the Minister affirmed.
The Minister commended citizens for their vigilance and cooperation, urging them to continue reporting suspicious movements and fully supporting the administration’s drive for law and order.
Wike stated that Abuja’s security record is proof that progress is attainable when citizens and government work together. “As we mark 65 years of nationhood, let us look forward with renewed hope. The FCT will continue to remain the symbol of our unity, our resilience, and now, one of the safest places to call home in Nigeria,” he said.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Arise TV this morning, Police Commissioner Adewale while speaking on the tragic incident, said
“Regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident and to set the records straight, some armed robbers gained access into Unique apartment where Sommie lives, a twin three-storey 18-flat apartment around Katampe under Mabuchi divisional area.
“Two guards, security men were on duty and one of them who had the courage to challenge sustained a gun shot.
“Under this condition and the panic that would have resulted under this kind of environment, Sommie actually occupied an apartment on the topmost floor of the building; and out of fear, she jumped down from the third floor. The consequences is what we are seeing.
“Alas, a distress call was made to the command’s control room. Policemen moved to the scene. What they could see was the unconscious body of Sommie on the floor. They picked her and took her to Maitama General hospital where the doctor on duty tried as much as possible to see whether they could resuscitate her using the CPR.
“It is unfortunate. She couldn’t make it and that is the story.”
He said an investigation team has been set up to fish out the assailants to ensure they are brought to justice.
