Works Minister Dave Umahi has ordered the immediate reopening of Independence Bridge in Lagos, to ease the excessive traffic jam in Victoria Island and Lagos Island due to ongoing maintenance works.
The directive comes amid concerns over worsening traffic congestion caused by the bridge’s closure.
The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Keshi said her team was already working to implement remedial measures to reopen the bridge for vehicular traffic, as parts of the bridge have already been damaged.
The bridge was initially closed on March 19, 2025, for emergency repairs, with authorities stating that the restoration process would last until May 26, 2025.
However, following a review of the situation, Umahi has instructed that the bridge be reopened ahead of schedule to restore smooth vehicular movement in the area.
The closure had led to significant gridlock, affecting commuters and businesses in Lagos.
The reopening is expected to alleviate traffic pressure and enhance connectivity within the city.
