No fewer than 25 people have been confirmed dead in an accident at Ugwu Onyeama in Enugu State along the Enugu-Onitsha highway.
The June 12 accident, involving 10 private and commercial buses, happened at a Nigerian Army checkpoint, where traffic had built up waiting to be passed by soldiers.
Going by eyewitnesses’ accounts, a heavy-duty truck suffered a brake failure and smashed into many vehicles stopped at the checkpoint on the hilly road.
The victims died on the spot, with several more injured people spread out on the ground.
“We counted 25 people who lost their lives instantly,” one of the eyewitnesses said.” Many injured people were rushed to the hospital.”
A video of the incident shows bodies of victims scattered on the road.
Some vehicles, including a petrol tanker truck, were seen plunged into a nearby ditch.
Cars were also seen mangled beyond repair.
